Our Approach & Goals

How KONREF aligns its operations with the UN Sustainable Development Goals — and invests in renewable energy on a path to net zero.

Sustainability grounded in how we actually operate.

Refractory production is energy-intensive and magnesite mining has a land and dust footprint. We address both directly — investing in renewable energy to decarbonise how we power the plant, and managing our mining footprint to the standards our permits and our region require.

KONREF is a manufacturing company, not a services business. Our sustainability commitments are operational: they concern how we run the mine, the rotary kiln, the pressing hall and the laboratory — not communication strategies or offset purchases.

The SDGs we are aligned to.

Decent Work & Economic Growth

Stable, long-term employment for a skilled workforce in Konya, Turkey — with fair wages, development opportunities and safe working conditions.

Industry, Innovation & Infrastructure

Continuous investment in our production infrastructure, laboratory modernisation and R&D — building an increasingly capable and efficient manufacturing base.

Responsible Consumption & Production

Minimising waste in production, developing chrome-free product alternatives, and supporting customers to extend furnace campaign life — reducing total refractory consumption.

Climate Action

Powering our operations from our own solar field arrays and expanding our renewable-energy investment — targeting net zero on our energy impact by 2030, while continuing to reduce energy intensity on the rotary kiln and in brick firing.

Life on Land

Responsible mining practice: dust suppression, site rehabilitation, and responsible water management at our magnesite extraction operations.

Partnerships for Goals

Engagement with Özkaymak Holding group sustainability initiatives and collaboration with customers on lower-impact refractory solutions.

Renewable energy and the path to net zero.

A growing share of the electricity that runs our operations is generated by our own solar field arrays — and our investment in renewable energy continues to expand. Our goal is to reach net zero on our energy impact, and to generate beyond our own consumption, by 2030.

This is part of a deliberate expansion into the energy sector. Our diverse investments in renewable generation are driven by a clear motivation: to help preserve this country for the generations that follow.

  • Solar generation — our solar field arrays already supply part of our electricity demand, and capacity continues to grow.
  • Net zero by 2030 — our target is to offset our full energy impact and generate beyond our own consumption.
  • Chrome-free products — our magnesia-spinel range is chrome-free as standard, reducing downstream hazardous waste for cement and lime customers.
  • Process optimisation — continuous kiln efficiency monitoring to reduce specific energy consumption per tonne of DBM.
